Man held hostage by Taliban group didn't believe captors when they told him Donald Trump was President

Tue, 10/17/2017 - 03:30

Man held hostage by Taliban group didn't believe captors when they told him Donald Trump was PresidentA man who was held hostage by a Taliban-linked group for five years has said he refused to believe his captors when they told him Donald Trump had become the US President. Canadian Joshua Boyle, his American wife, Caitlan Coleman, and their children were completely isolated from the outside world while they were held by the Haqqani network in Afghanistan. The pair were kidnapped in the mountainous Wardak province in October 2012 during a backpacking holiday through Asia while Mrs Coleman was heavily pregnant with their first child. Their three children were born in captivity and the family endured horrendous treatment at the hands of the group before being freed in a dramatic rescue operation by Pakistani forces last week. In one of his first interviews since his release, Mr Boyle said the family were starved of any information or entertainment during their years of captivity except for a slate and a piece of chalk. When Mr Boyle pleaded for some reading materials to alleviate the boredom he said his kidnappers brought the family a pile of dirty washing. However, while the group were making a proof-of-life video of the family, Mr Boyle said one of his captors told him the reality TV star, Donald Trump, had won the US presidency. “It didn’t enter my mind that he was being serious,” Mr Boyle told the Toronto Star. Mr Boyle and Mrs Coleman in one of the videos released by the Haqqani network in 2013 Credit: Coleman Family The couple and their children,  Jonah, 4, Noah, 2, and newborn Grace, are now staying with Mr Boyle’s parents in Ontario, Canada, and learning to adapt to their new freedom. Mr Boyle said the traumas his eldest son Jonah suffered while being held hostage in cells no larger than a bathtub and being abruptly moved from location to location had left him terrified to close his eyes while in captivity. He said: “Last night [Jonah] wouldn’t close his eyes because he was so excited and he just wanted to sit on his pile of toys with a gigantic smile on his face. Mr Boyle playing with his son Jonah playing at their home in Ontario, Canada Credit: AFP/Mike Carroccetto “It took him about three hours to fall asleep, and it wasn’t three hours of panic. It was three hours where he just wanted to really, really cherish this gigantic rabbit and these plastic Lego blocks and these toys, and he wanted to sit there and bask in being ‘no bandi’ after all of this time.” “Bandi” was the term the kidnappers used for their hostages. In a press conference after he was released last week Mr Boyle detailed some of the appalling treatment his family had endured and alleged that the kidnappers had murdered one of his children and raped his wife. Their freedom was secured when the Pakistan army intercepted the kidnappers as they brought the family into the Kurram district of the semi-autonomous tribal belt on Pakistan's Afghan border, following a tip-off from US intelligence. The Haqqani network, which runs a lucrative kidnapping business in the tribal border regions, is believed to still hold two more US citizens. Mr Boyle arriving back at Toronto's Pearson International Airport on Friday Credit:  The Canadian Press Since returning the couple has faced questions about why a husband and his five-month pregnant wife, who is now 31, were in a lawless area of Afghanistan in 2012. Mr Boyle was previously married to the sister of Omar Khadr, a Canadian man who spent 10 years at Guantanamo Bay after being captured in 2002 in a firefight at an Al Qaeda compound in Afghanistan. Responding to the questions, Mr Boyle said: “I’m a harmless hippie and I do not kill even mice. I’ve been vegetarian for 17 years. Anybody who knows me would laugh at the notion that I went with designs on becoming a combatant.”

US strikes kill 'dozens' at IS training camps

Mon, 10/16/2017 - 22:20

US strikes kill 'dozens' at IS training campsThe US military said on Monday it killed dozens of Islamic State fighters at the group's training camps in central Yemen, in the first such strikes in the country's conflict. This is the first time allies of Yemen's internationally recognised government have announced raids against IS footholds.

Remains found in crocodile believed to be missing Queensland pensioner

Mon, 10/16/2017 - 20:23

Remains found in crocodile believed to be missing Queensland pensionerHuman remains have been found inside a crocodile that is believed to have killed a pensioner in Queensland last week.  The 4.3-metre estuarine crocodile was captured on Monday night at the Mowbray River near Craiglie in northeast Australia, close to where Anne Cameron went missing from an aged care facility near Port Douglas seven days ago. The 79-year-old is thought to have become disorientated on a walk and wandered into dense bushland. Police later found clothing, a walking stick with her name and human remains beside a crocodile-infested creek near Four Mile Beach, about a mile from the aged care facility. Wildlife officers set traps  to try to catch the creature that is believed to have killed Ms Cameron. The captured animal was examined in Cairns on Tuesday, with human remains found inside. A Saltwater Crocodile is pictured at the Australian Reptile Park in Sydney  Credit:  Ian Waldie/Getty Images "Investigations continue with officers preparing a report for the coroner," police said. Isabella Eggins, a granddaughter of Ms Cameron, said  last week the family feared she had died in tragic circumstances. “It is my deep regret to inform you that following an extensive search and the discovery of certain items as a result of that search, we have the firm belief that my mother Anne Cameron has passed away in tragic circumstances,” Ms Eggins said on Facebook. Saltwater crocodiles, which can grow up to seven metres long and weigh more than a tonne, are a common feature of the vast continent's tropical north and kill an average of two people a year. A series of crocodile attacks in the region in recent years has prompted calls for the state government to order a cull – a move that has so far been rejected. Ms Cameron's family also said they did not want to see any crocs culled. "The crocodiles... are not responsible for being crocodiles, and doing what crocodiles do," her son Craig Eggins said, according to the Cairns Post.

U.S. judge in Texas invalidates Allergan patents on Restasis

Mon, 10/16/2017 - 14:34

U.S. judge in Texas invalidates Allergan patents on RestasisA U.S. judge on Monday invalidated patents on Allergan Plc's dry-eye medicine Restasis on grounds that the patents cover ideas that are obvious, sending shares of the pharmaceutical company down 3.5 percent. Judge William Bryson issued the ruling in federal court in Marshall, Texas, in a longstanding dispute between Allergan and generic drugmakers Mylan NV, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd and Akorn Inc. Bryson said a group of patents Allergan obtained on Restasis, which are set to expire in 2024, should not have been granted because they describe methods of treatment that were obvious in light of earlier patents granted to the company.
