Georgian ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili freed after dramatic rooftop arrest in Ukraine

Yahoo Animals and Pets - Tue, 12/05/2017 - 04:18

Georgian ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili freed after dramatic rooftop arrest in UkraineFormer Georgia president Mikheil Saakashvili has been freed by protesters after a dramatic arrest on the rooftop of his Kiev flat amid a feud with Ukraine's president.  The authorities had seized the firebrand politician, who served as governor of Ukraine's Odessa region between 2015-16, on accusations of trying to overthrow the government of his former ally Petro Poroshenko. But the botched arrest only galvanised support for Mr Saakashvili and led to ongoing demonstrations in the capital and a criminal case against his sympathisers in parliament. Mr Saakashvili had climbed onto the roof of his eight-storey building in downtown Kiev and threatened to jump when heavily armed security forces stormed his flat on Tuesday morning.   “Poroshenko is a thief! Poroshenko is a traitor to Ukraine!” he yelled before the troopers seized him and put him in a van. But protesters blocked the vehicle with other cars and makeshift barricades as the police attempted to quell the unrest with tear gas.   Police spray tear gas at protesters who tried to prevent a van from taking Mr Saakashvili away. Credit: Gleb Garanich/Reuters After an hours-long impasse, the crowd broke open a side door and freed Mr Saakashvili. With handcuffs still hanging off one wrist, he called for protests to remove “Poroshenko and his whole gang” and led hundreds to the parliament building. While Mr Saakashvili addressed protesters outside, prosecutor general Yury Lutsenko told parliament that the Georgian ex-president had received $500,000 from a “criminal gang” led by former president Viktor Yanukovych, who fled to Russia amid protests in 2014. This was part of "Moscow's plan for a Russian winter in Kiev," he said. Mr Lutsenko played the MPs what he said was a recording of Mr Saakashvili agreeing to send a representative to meet Yanukovych associate Sergei Kurchenko, who was sanctioned by the European Union after departing Ukraine in 2014. He said Mr Saakashvili, who has denied the allegations, must turn himself in and protesters must disperse within 24 hours. Credit: Valentyn Ogirenko/Reuters Since he forced his way across the Polish-Ukrainian border with supporters in September, the Georgian politician has been holding protests calling for the impeachment of his old university acquaintance Mr Poroshenko, most recently marching through the capital on Sunday.   Mr Saakashvili came to power in Georgia in the 2003 Rose Revolution, promising pro-Western reforms, but lost territory in a disastrous war with Russia in 2008. He was charged with abuse of office after he left in 2013.  He was tapped to head the region of Odessa in 2015, but had a falling out with Mr Poroshenko over the torpid tempo of reforms and accused the president of corruption.   Having stripped him of the citizenship he was previously granted, the Ukrainian authorities denied his application for asylum this autumn and said he is in the country illegally.  Supporters of Mr Saakashvili try to prevent security forces from taking him away in a van. Turkey could break off ties with Israel over Jerusalem: Erdogan

Yahoo Animals and Pets - Tue, 12/05/2017 - 03:29

ErdoganPresident Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday Turkey could go as far as breaking off diplomatic ties with Israel if the United States formally recognizes Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, a move he said would be a "red line" for Muslims. U.S. officials have said Trump is likely to give a speech on Wednesday unilaterally recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, a step that would break with decades of U.S. policy and could fuel violence in the Middle East. Israel captured Arab East Jerusalem in the 1967 Middle East war.

Arctic sea ice melt to exacerbate California droughts: study

Yahoo Animals and Pets - Tue, 12/05/2017 - 03:03

studyBy Timothy Gardner WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Melting Arctic sea ice could render sun-soaked California vulnerable to a recurrence of the severe drought suffered in recent years as it is likely to cause high pressure systems that push away rain-bearing storms, a study released on Tuesday said. As temperatures rise, the Arctic Ocean is expected to become ice-free within two or three decades, resulting in more of the sun's heat being stored in the Arctic Ocean, leading to atmospheric circulation changes and cloud formations in the tropical Pacific that move north. "This has the potential to make a drought very similar to the one we had in 2012 to 2016," said Ivana Cvijanovic, an atmospheric scientist at the Department of Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

US Supreme Court allows Donald Trump's travel ban to go into full effect

Yahoo Animals and Pets - Tue, 12/05/2017 - 02:42

US Supreme Court allows Donald Trump's travel ban to go into full effectThe US Supreme Court handed a legal victory to Donald Trump, ruling that his travel ban can be fully enforced pending an appeal. Mr Trump's ban, now in its third iteration, bars travel to the US by residents of six predominantly Muslim countries - Chad, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen. Seven of the court's nine justices agreed to lift two injunctions imposed by lower appeal courts two months ago that had partially blocked the ban while legal challenges to it continue. The ruling meant the open-ended policy could take full effect while those legal challenges are resolved. It was not a final ruling. A White House spokesman said: "We are not surprised by today's Supreme Court decision permitting immediate enforcement of the president's proclamation limiting travel from countries presenting heightened risks of terrorism. "The proclamation is lawful and essential to protecting our homeland. We look forward to presenting a fuller defence of the proclamation as the pending cases work their way through the courts." In a statement, Attorney General Jeff Sessions called the Supreme Court's action "a substantial victory for the safety and security of the American people." Mr Sessions said the Trump administration was heartened that a clear majority of the justices "allowed the president's lawful proclamation protecting our country's national security to go into full effect." There have been protests against the ban Credit: Manuel Balce Ceneta/AP Two of the Supreme Court's liberal justices, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor, said they would have denied the Trump administration's request to lift the injunctions. Mr Trump announced the latest version of the ban in September, which led to immediate challenges in US appeals courts in Virginia and California. Opponents in those cases argued that the measure targeted Muslims in violation of the US Constitution, and did not advance security goals as the government claimed. They convinced the two appeals courts to put implementation of the ban on hold while they and government lawyers argued out the case. But the Trump administration has now secured support from the Supreme Court to move ahead with implementing it while the appeals in Virginia and California continue. Hearings are expected in both those cases this week, meaning the ban could wind its way back to to the Supreme Court again in a matter of months. Ahead of the Supreme Court's decision on Monday lawyers for the Trump administration had argued the policy was crucial to protect US national security, and that it was based on a "comprehensive" worldwide review. Donald Trump's travel ban The US Justice Department argued that it "justifies the president’s finding that the national interest warrants the exclusion of certain foreign nationals, and conclusively rebuts respondents’ claims that the entry restrictions were motivated by animus rather than protecting national security".  The state of Hawaii and the International Refugee Assistance Project, which had opposed the ban, argued to the Supreme Court that "the president’s third travel ban, like his first and his second, is irreconcilable with the immigration laws and the Constitution". "President Trump's anti-Muslim prejudice is no secret - he has repeatedly confirmed it, including just last week on Twitter," American Civil Liberties Union lawyer Omar Jadwat said, referring to the president re-tweeting anti-Muslim videos posted by a far-right British party leader.  "It's unfortunate that the full ban can move forward for now, but this order does not address the merits of our claims. We continue to stand for freedom, equality and for those who are unfairly being separated from their loved ones," Jadwat added. At a glance | Donald Trump’s immigration ban It had also previously been ruled in lower appeal courts that people from the six predominantly Muslim nations who had a "bona fide" relationship with someone in the US could not be kept out of the country under the ban. Grandparents, cousins and other relatives were among those the lower courts said could not be excluded. Now, those relationships will no longer provide a blanket exemption from the ban, although visa officials can make exceptions on a case-by-case basis. The new policy was not expected to cause the same kind of chaos that ensued at airports when Mr Trump rolled out his first ban without warning in January. He subsequently issued a revised ban in March after the first was blocked by the courts. The second version, which was temporary, expired in September after a long court fight and was then replaced with the present, third version. Mr Trump's latest ban also covers people from North Korea and certain government officials from Venezuela, but its main focus is travellers from the six predominantly Muslim countries. Refugees were unaffected, as a  temporary ban on refugees expired in October.
