Mongooses – Snakes Beware

yellow mongoose

Moongooses live in warmer regions of Africa and Eurasia. The 33 species are in the carnivore family and related to viverrids and civets but tend to be a pinch smaller and are more frequently busy in the day time scouting about the land. They are of course famous for their fearless and savage treatment of snakes but they are not out to hunt snakes generally and more often eat smaller easier catches like rodents or insects. Most live solitary lives although there are others that prefer to live in packs like the meerkats and banded mongooses. They have complex social relations and have learned to live together to combat the ever present danger of predators on the African plains.
